Anime and Hentai Definitions
What are all those terms you see everywhere referring to different
aspects of anime and hentai art? Here are a few of the
definitions of those animation terms in easy to understand english
so that you can better appreciate animation art. |

Anime
(pronounced Ann-e-may)
- Japanese animation. Also known by some as Japanimation
- Anime Cell
- Generally refers to one single frame or cell of an
animation sequence.
- Fan Service
- Originally referenced scenes which were animated for fan
appeal. It has come to refer to scenes with scantily (or
not at all) dressed characters.
- Fansub
- A production that was subtitled by fans.
Many times it is done in home studios or with home PC's and
the translations not always accurate.
- Gay Hentai
- Generally considered to refer to gay hentai art.
Gay perverted art depicting all types of sexually explicit
activities between two or more men.
- Hentai
- Refers to sexually explicit material. Also
loosely translated to mean Pervert or Perverted. Etchi
is also the Japanese pronunciation of the letter "H"..
- Hiragana
(
Hiragana no character)
- Japanese characters used for native words, as well as
grammatical particles. Each character corresponds to one
syllable, so you can write the syllabic pronunciation of a
kanji character if you'reunsure of its writing (or are
lazy). A very common hiragana character in anime titles is
"no", which means "of" or "belonging to". Although it
doesn't look like it, hiragana characters are actually
descended from Chinese writing. (see kanji)
- Irasshaimase!
- You will often hear this anytime you walk into a
Japanese restaurant. It means Welcome!
- J-Pop
- Abbreviation for Japanese popular music.
- Kanji
- Japanese characters based on Chinese characters. Most
kanji characters have a specific meaning and several ways to
be read.
- Katakana
- Japanese characters that are used to write words of
foreign origin. Katakana was developed based on
Chinese writing.
- Kawaii
- Means cute, it also refers to character designs. The
Japanese also has several other endearing meanings such as
"dear to me" and even "you poor thing/person".
- Manga
- Japanese literature in the form of a comic book.
Traditionally, most manga is produced in black-and-white.
- Miyazaki
- One of the world's most famous animators, Hayao
Miyazaki. Generally considered to be one of the founders of
modern Japanese animation.
- OAV / OVA
- Stands for "Original Animation Video" or "Original Video
Animation". Refers to an anime series released directly to
for home video.
- Roomaaji (also Romanji)
- A way of transliterating Japanese pronunciations using
roman characters (like English uses).
- SD (Super-Deformed)
- An art style using greatly exaggerated proportions of
characters.
- Seiyuu
- A Japanese voice actor or actress, who is sometimes also
a singer.
- Shounen
- Literally means "boy", shounen anime / manga
refers to anime or manga aimed for boys, like Dragon
Ball.
- Tezuka
- Osamu Tezuka was one of the first well known animators
in Japan. His works include Testuwan Atomu (Mighty
Atom, also known as Astroboy to English
audiences).
- Yaoi
- Means Boy - Boy love. Originally coined for
reference to a genre of anime just for young girls.
It has grown to mean gay anime in recent translations.
